Big dreams

OK, folks - what are your BIG dreams? You do have BIG dreams, right? Now, it may well be that your BIG dreams involve small actions over time. I truly believe that we serve a God who can accomplish ANYTHING - and the way I see it, our task is to find what He has going on and figure out how to contribute to that. If He is already at work, it makes more sense to me to find what He's doing and participate - rather than start something new and ask Him to bless it.

So - what are your BIG dreams?

I've been pondering that question the entire weekend. What is my big dream? I don't know. I use to have a plan (dream) but then everything crashed on it. It seems every time I start to dream I get sadly disapointed. So I don't plan anymore.

Yeah, I'm with Paul, that's a hard one to answer, but it's a good thing to think about. I'll have to get back to you on that one...

Do you think for it to "count," your "big dream" has to be directly for God specifically, or can it just be something selfish that you want for yourself? I can think of lots of things that I "dream" about, but they're usually just things for me to express myself creatively and don't have any deeper spiritual meaning. For instance, I have been thinking a lot about making my own clothes (I know that doesn't sound so BIG, but it would be a big deal to me), writing a book, writing songs, and all sorts of other creative projects. These may not be very far-reaching, grandiose dreams, but I think that they're still valid because God created me to enjoy stuff like that. For myself I think I would be content to just continue "creating" things and see where God takes me with it.

Then there's always the normal dreams, like starting a family and all that. I do dream about having kids one day, and, although that is very "ordinary," to me that would be a VERY BIG thing that would change my life.

The whole "big dream" thing you speak of reminds me a lot of--please forgive me for mentioning it--the "Prayer of Jabez" stuff. Even though I really detest commercialized Christianity (of which the "Prayer of Jabez" is a PRIME example), the actual verse in the Bible that the book is based on has a good point:

"Jabez cried out to the God of Israel, 'Oh, that you would bless me and enlarge my territory! Let your hand be with me, and keep me from harm so that I will be free from pain.' And God granted his request." -1 Chronicles 4:10

What I get out of this verse is that no dream is too big for God to grant it to you. If you venture to ask for it, God will (if it is His will) do really great things for you. Notice that all of Jabez's requests are for himself. When my youth group studied the book after it came out, one point that was driven into us was that God will give you whatever you want if you are asking for something to further His kingdom. For the record, I really don't think that is what the verse is saying at all. Basically, I don't think that for God to use you to do great things for him you have to do things or ask for things that are SPECIFICALLY for ministry. God made each of us to have different interests and desires for a reason, so if we just do what comes naturally (as long as we have an attitude that reflects the fruits of the Spirit and are not being all greedy about it) He will use our lives for His good purpose without us having to agonize about "What does God want me to do for Him?" (I'm not saying that you're saying that, I'm just posting it for everyone's benefit.)

So, I guess my BIG dreams are kind of small right now, but I think that is okay because that's just where I am in my life right now. I do think about doing bigger things maybe later in my life, but I know I'll never do the big stuff then if I don't master the small things now.
