Almost a teen
I can hardly believe that my older daughter is about to be a teen. It feels as though it has all happened so quickly. Though we still spend too much time (though not as much) dealing with "drama," she is definitely maturing... in fits and spurts.
She seems to have come through the "physically awkward" stage just fine. She carries herself with a grace that impresses me. Her loyalty to her friends is most admirable. She is a lot of fun, and she even laughs at my humor. (In fact, humor is how I am often able to help her fix a bad mood.)
Is she perfect? Uh, no. Her room is often a MESS! (there's a unique complaint) She wrestles at times with remembering that we (Natalie and I) are the parents (another unique one). I want to inspire and help motivate her to push herself more. I do not want a habit of laziness to take root. All that said...
She is a beautiful young lady, and I love her very much. I am very proud to be her dad.

I'm in the same boat... i've heard they grow up fast... mine's not even here and we're starting to plan for college. 'course, that's just common sense.
oh, ps... read the latest post on my blog... i'd LOVE to stir a good discussion about this last topic... it's a bout PBC. Goode Advice
That's got to be one of those "makes you feel old" kind of things. The Salley kids make me feel that way from time to time. Lord willing Becky and I will be parents at some point; but it kind of freaks me out a bit...
Think of it this way, Tommy: Would you rather feel "old" or "lonely"? "Old" comes whether we like it or not. However, we still have at least SOME influence over whether or not we'll have someone to push our wheel chairs when that time comes...
I also feel that way about the Salley kids sometimes, but I think it's pretty cool.
I'm sure you already know this, Michael, but as your daughter gets older, it will be even that much more important for you to just love on her. I'm sure that by now she knows that you have very high expectations for her (and rightly so), but she will probably be more sensitive to how you respond to her than she will actually let on. She will need to be assured that you are still her "Daddy" and not just yet another person evaluating her. YOU, more than ANYONE else, have the power to seriously build up or to crush her self-image. I'm sure that you have already instilled in her the things that are most important. Just don't take it for granted that she knows that you love her just the way she is. Anyway, this is just my two cents coming from a girl who remembers what it was like to be a teenager. You can take it or leave it...
Y'know, when our daughter gets here, I wonder if it will finally dawn on me that I'm an adult? It's like i know HOW to make grown up decisions... I even DO make grown up decisions. I just think of them as "decisions" without merit of the age behind them... does any of that make sense?
Wow, I bet I was sitting right beside you in the computer room as you typed your comment to me here on Mike's blog. Funny you didn't just turn around and say it to me then...kinda sureal...(insert Twilight Zone music here) ...
